The 2010 / 2011 membership invoices are being sent to the main contact person at existing member institutions. Membership allows submissions to the National student awards, eligibility for faculty diversity awards, and all the sharing and great advice from Broadcast educators coast-to-coast.

2010 / 2011

General Notes:

  • All original student work.
  • Copyright cleared music (i.e. Production Music License)
  • Music Video Category - Original music only *(written permission to broadcast/release forms held by producer)
  • Work produced between April 2010 and April 2011.

All BEAC Institutions may enter two (2) submissions per category (video or audio) from each Program (i.e. Broadcast Journalism, Radio, TV, New Media, Animation, etc.) and entries may be in English or French and must include a brief synopsis of the production.

Awards Judging Criteria

v01 Documentary 30:00 Judges are looking for good storytelling (a journey, getting to the point), good use of sound (natural sound, clips, voiceover), creative artistic ability (camera, lighting), fair, balanced and accurate journalism and good pacing and flow (editing).
v02 Drama 30:00 An entertaining production that captures the essence of the dramatic genre. Judges are looking for: a well-developed dramatic script, effective use of audio/music (performers delivery, audio pick up, background sound), creative artistic ability (camera, lighting) and good dramatic pacing and flow (editing)
v03 Comedy 30:00 An entertaining production that captures the essence of the dramatic genre. Judges are looking for: a well-developed comedic script, effective use of audio/music (delivery, pick-up, mood, background sound), creative artistic ability (camera, lighting) and good comedic pacing and flow (editing)
v04 Series or Special 30:00 A production series meant to be broadcast as episodes or, a specifically- produced production to coincide with a LIVE event (Election or Telethon). Judges are looking for: good script development for a television series or special, effective use of audio/music (narration, talent delivery, mood, background sound etc.), creative artistic ability (camera, lighting) and good thematic pacing and flow (editing)
v05 Studio Newscast 30:00 Judges are looking for professional on-air performance, excellent technical and production achievement throughout the broadcast, excellent writing and news lineup selection, professional field work (if applicable).
v06 Music Video 10:00 An original audio/video production that showcases a musical performance. Judges are looking for: creative artistic ability, original music with permission to broadcast, excellence in audio (music in synch), quality editing and/or visual effects work.
v07 Corporate or Psa Long 5:00 A long-duration produced public service announcement. Judges are looking for: a community-oriented developed script, effective use of audio and video, creative artistic ability, good pacing and flow
v08 Corporate or Psa Short :60 A short-duration produced public service announcement. Judges are looking for: a community-oriented developed script, effective use of audio and video, creative artistic ability, good pacing and flow
v09 ENG News Story 3:00 Judges are looking for fair, balanced and accurate journalism, good storytelling due to copy, video & audio and effective technical and production qualities
v10 Animation 5:00 Stop-motion or computer animation production work intended for broadcast use. Judges are looking for: creative artistic ability and originality in animation work.
v11 Commercial or Promo :60 A produced piece to attract public attention to sell a product or promote programming. Judges are looking for: a sales and marketing-oriented copy, effective use of audio and video to promote the product or program, creative artistic ability and good pacing and flow
v12 Web Design n/a Web sited designed by the student. Must be a working web site from any platform. Judges are looking for: URL clearly stated, Clean code and no broken links
Audio
a01 Feature / Documentary 30:00 A longer-form produced piece of public interest. Judges are looking for: strong production values, especially creative use of sound, clear focus, logical structure, effective pacing and solid writing
a02 Drama or Comedy 30:00 An entertaining production that captures the essence of either the dramatic or comedic genre. Judges are looking for: whether the piece achieves its goal (in terms of a captivating piece of drama or comedy and how that goal is achieved through the use of sound, structure, writing and creative production.
a03 Spot News 2:30 A hard news story from the field of immediate interest. Please indicate whether the entry is a LIVE hit or PRODUCED piece. Judges are looking for: solid news values such as impact and relevance, effective writing, including a captivating lead and good use of sound.
a04 Commercial :60 A produced piece to attract public attention to sell a product. Judges are looking for: creative writing, strong announcing and production values, especially use of sound and effective promotion.
a05 Promotion :60 A produced piece advertising an event, concert, fundraiser, radio station on-location, contests, etc. *Copyright music waived as per acceptable practice for in-house promotional spots. Judges are looking for: creative writing, and use of sound including announcing, strong production values and achievement of promotional goal
a06 PSA :60 A produced public service announcement. Judges are looking for: creative writing and use of sound including announcing, strong production values and achievement of promotional goal for public service

Judging Institutions

Judging Committees should be made up a Minimum of: three (3) Judges;

  • two (2) from the industry (most closely linked to the category if possible)
  • one (1) from the school (BEAC member)

The BEAC member should also help coordinate, moderate and/or chair the proceedings as well as inform the winning school's contact person.

Marking Sheets should include both constructive criticisms and positive comments as these may be used as feedback to the colleges at a later date.

Maximum lengths are guidelines for equitable judging. It is at the discretion of the judging committee to review each entry as fairly as possible based on merit rather than length.
